Why is Fortnite so Popular?
“Fortnite” is a video game produced by Epic Games and was released on July 25, 2017. The game features two modes: “Battle Royale” and “Save the World”. “Save the World” features players working together to fight off hordes of encroaching monsters, while “Battle Royale”, the mode that the majority of gamers play, drops a single player, a team of two, or a team of four onto a large island that serves as the battleground for 100 players from around the world.
The game starts off with the player and his or her group of friends skydiving onto a selected area on the island. After the players land, it is a fight to the death. Similar to the movie “The Hunger Games”, players have to scavenge whatever weapons or supplies that will support them throughout the match, and they then have to be the last group remaining in order to win. Fortnite’s trademark feature however, is the ability it grants players to build structures to protect themselves from enemy fire. With practice, the best players are able to build gargantuan structures quickly, giving them advantageous offensive positioning and defense from the enemy player.
With other competing “Battle Royale” titles like “Playerunknown’s Battlegrounds” and “H1Z1: Battle Royale”, Fortnite has been forced to distinguish itself, and they have been dominating the market while doing so. There are three major reasons for its success. Fortnite is completely free-to-play, as the only money that flows through the game is the purchasing of micro-transactions that includes outfits, dancing emotes, and more. These serve only as cosmetic items and give no competitive advantage. The second reason that explains the game’s popularity is its cross-platforming feature. This means that whether a player wants to play on Xbox, Playstation, or PC, they can all play together. The third reason is the consistent updates to freshen the gaming experience to increase replay value. Epic Games adds new cosmetics and new game modes such as “Blitz mode” and “Sniper Shootout” almost weekly to make sure no one is getting bored. With so many features available in a free game, Fortnite quickly became a must-have for gamers worldwide.
Given its immense gaming population, Fortnite has become a pop culture sensation. ESPN has created ads with Fortnite, professional athletes imitate dancing emotes during games, and some of the largest Youtube channels and Twitch streamers like ‘Ninja” and “TSM Myth” create Fortnite content every day.

We The People
In Columbia High School (CHS) a photo gallery recently opened up for students and staff on May 1, 2018.
The person in charge of putting this together is Mr. Ficher, who is a photography teacher at CHS. The
room is to depict all those who were lost through school shootings. School shootings have been a
horrific event occurring frequently in America. The visualization of the room had pictures of different
students expressing different emotions. These different emotions; no emotion, eyes closed, happy, and
eyes up. This was a way to show that every victim isn’t just a number.

The goal of this gallery is to show that these kids have a big life ahead of them no matter what situation
they are in. The day the “We The People” gallery opened, they made it a prayer to all the school shootings
to take place, asking people if they could write something nice in the middle to make the environment
enjoyable. Each student that conveyed these emotions are real life emotions in everyday life. Columbia
High School photography students participate in this gallery by taking pictures of the different students.
The picture above are all the different types of angles, pictures the photographers used to convey the
tribute to the school shootings. Norman Ayala 18' said, "This was truly a great experience for me to take
part of because it helped me learn how to capture different peoples emotions and to see that every single
person is unique in their own way. As I was taking photos of different people, I noticed that everyone had
a different style to what they were posing for, and that was a cool experience to watch".
