Yanny vs Laurel Debate

In late May yet another internet trend has arisen. Following the theme of previous arguments, such as whether or not water is wet, the internet is up in arms regarding a recording, that was originally posted to Reddit, in which a person could be heard saying either “Yanny” or “Laurel.” Some people swear by one of these sounds, whereas others can hear both. Columbia High School (CHS) student, Michaela Deutsch-Dornfeld, ‘19, said, “I heard Yanny the first time I listened to it but now I hear Laurel every time.”
There have been some conspiracies as to whether or not there are multiple recordings going around. However, those rumors have been dispelled, as according to an article in The Verge by Rachel Becker and Elizabeth Lopatto, the science behind the recording involves different frequencies; “the acoustic information that makes us hear Yanny is higher frequency than the acoustic information that makes us hear Laurel… But some of it is also the mechanics of your ears, and what you’re expecting to hear.” Even so, many people still are arguing, and the Yanny vs Laurel debate isn’t expected to be the last internet debate.

This Is America
Donald Glover releases new music video that sheds light on controversial topics in America.
Glover does it all. He writes and acts is the television show Atlanta. He is in the new movie Solo: A Star Wars Story. He even hosted SNL two weeks ago. Now his song This Is America is reaching its second week on the top of the charts with 180 million views on youtube. This controversial video has everyone talking. Childish Gambino, Glovers alter ego/stage name, is everywhere. This video portrays a shirtless Gambino dancing around a warehouse with teenagers in school uniforms. In the background there is only chaos.
This video is filled with symbolism. Lisa Respers France with CNN said, “You will need to watch it more than once...the video is pretty surreal and packed full of messages.” It shows violence, police brutality, guns, e.t.c.. Dancing Teens distract the viewers eyes from the violence in the background. This represents how America is easily distracted from real issues. Every time someone is killed by a gun, the gun is gently carried away in red cloth and the person in dragged away. This portrays the way guns are treated in America, like they are more important than a human life. In the final moments of the video it portrays a frightened looking Gambino sprinting away from a group of white police officers that are chasing him. This is represents the issue of police brutality and “Gambino’s sprint goes back to a long tradition of black Americans having to run to save their lives” said Time journalist Mahita Gajanan. These are just some of the different messages in this video.
Gambino’s video has everyone talking and has received a lot of positive feedback. “I think it is something that no one has done before and it is a really meaningful video,” said Elyssa Neilson ‘19. Many are saying it is the top contender for music video of the year. Yet in all interviews Glover refuses to comment about the reaction his video is getting. Nonetheless Glover/Gambino is a very unique artist unlike anyone else in the industry. "I think music is a great way to spread important messages because it reaches a lot of people and can be done in a very artistic way," said Neilson.
